Abu Sayyaf member on US list arrested

ZAMBOANGA: Troops in the Zamboanga peninsula captured Thursday an alleged
member of the Abu Sayyaf kidnap gang with a $20,000 reward on his head
offered by the US government, an official said.

Toting Hanno, alias Jacaria, was arrested in a raid by military intelligence
agents on the island of Sacol off the Zam-boanga peninsula, the Southern
Command chief, Lt. Gen. Alberto Braganza, said.

Hanno's arrest came just hours before the US Embassy deputy chief of
mission, Joseph Mussomeli, arrived in Zam-boanga to inspect projects funded
by the US Agency for International Development (Usaid), Braganza said.

The military said Hanno was part of an Abu Sayyaf unit that raided a
Christian hospital in the town of Lamitan, Basilan, in 2001, during which
dozens of locals were kidnapped and some were later beheaded.

The same unit also seized three Americans from a southwestern resort in the
same year. Two of the Americans were later killed.

"He is tagged to be involved in the kidnapping in Lamitan during the siege
at Dr. Jose Torres Hospital on June 2, 2001," Braganza said.

"Hanno is on the US reward list with a $20,000,00 price," he added.

The suspect has been brought to an Air Force base here for interrogation and
would be presented to the press later Thursday, Bra-ganza said.

The Abu Sayyaf is a small group of Islamic militants blamed for a series of
kidnap-pings and bombings in the Philippines in recent years. The group has
kidnapped and ransomed off dozens of foreign hostages since 2000.

The group also claimed responsibility for the February bombing of a ferry
that killed about 100 people on Manila bay.

The group has been linked by both Washington and Manila to the al-Qaeda
terror network of Osama bin Laden.
