(AP) Philippine police seize homemade bombs, weapons at Islamic center
MANILA, Philippines
Three homemade bombs and an array of weapons were confiscated by
Philippine police in a raid Friday on an Islamic center in Manila.

The Islamic center had been under surveillance for the past three months
because of possible links to a ferry bombing on Manila Bay last year
that killed more than 100 people, said Federico Laciste, chief of the
metropolitan Manila Criminal Investigation and Detection Group.

Police said that bombing, the worst terrorist attack in the country, was
the handiwork of the al-Qaida-linked Abu Sayyaf group.

Police held for questioning 13 men and three women, mostly Muslim
converts, who were at the Islamic center on Friday. Police Capt. Jess
Kabigting said the improvised bombs were designed to be triggered by
mobile phone.

Metropolitan Manila Police Chief Avelino Razon told DZRH radio that a
bomb squad was examining components of the explosive devices.

Laciste said a rifle grenade, several pistols, a submachine gun with a
silencer, and assorted bomb-making paraphernalia were found with the
bombs.

A still undetermined amount of TNT in boxes was also recovered,
Kabigting said.

One of the women detained by police denied any knowledge of the bombs
and weapons, and said she and the others were herded out of the center
and didn't see what police recovered, DZRH reported.

Razon speculated the bombs may have been prepared for an attack on large
crowds attending the annual Catholic religious feast of the Black
Nazarene on Sunday in Manila's Quiapo district.

"The planned bombing (of the feast) is not yet confirmed, but what is
important is we have prevented, possibly, that plan," he said.
