BA jet turns back in terrorist alert

A British Airways flight from London to New York had to turn back
yesterday after the US authorities refused one of the passengers
permission to land.
The Boeing 747, which had taken off from Heathrow with 239
passengers, was three hours into its journey when the message came
through.
A spokesman for the United States Department of Homeland Security said
the name of a passenger travelling on a French passport had matched
that of a suspected member of a Moroccan terrorist group banned from
America.
The authorities requested that BA Flight 175 be diverted to Bangor,
Maine. But British Airways asked for and received permission for it to
return to London.
It landed at Heathrow at 5.30pm, nearly six and a half hours after
taking off.
Scotland Yard officers interviewed the passenger but released him
without charge. A police source said: "You can call this due care on
the part of the Americans or you can call it paranoia. It is up to you."
The other passengers boarded another flight to New York last night.
British Airways emphasised that there had been no threat to the safety
of the aircraft at any time.
"As procedure requires, we sent passenger information to the United
States after the flight departed," a spokesman said.
The United States Transportation Security Administration said: "There
was a person travelling on a French passport who was a positive match
with an anti-terrorism watch list."
America asks all carriers to provide passenger lists before landing.
Security was tightened after Richard Reid, from Brixton, south London,
tried to blow up a flight from Paris to Miami with explosives hidden
in his trainers in December 2001.
