Qatar and Oman relax visa rules

By Duraid Al Baik, UAE Editor and Saifur Rahman, Staff Reporter
Dubai: Qatar announced yesterday it will relax its visa requirements for
visitors from the Gulf.

The move is intended to increase the number of tourists from neighbouring
countries and encourage tour operators to include Qatar in their travel
packages.

Expatriates living in the Gulf can apply for their visas over the internet.
Nationals of GCC countries can already enter Qatar without visas.

In a paid advertisement in a pan-Arab magazine published in London, Qatari
authorities announced expatriates living in the Gulf can go to _www.e.gov.qa_
(http://www.e.gov.qa) to secure their visas online.

After completing the form, applicants will receive an immediate response
notifying them if their application was successful.

Upon approval, the applicant will be directed to a payment page, where the
required fee can be paid using a credit card. "Once the payment is processed,
the website will load a page containing the details of the approved visa," a
source from Qatar's e-government agency said.

Visitors will be allowed to enter Qatar by submitting a print-out of the
page, which includes the relevant details of their visas.

The online visa will allow visitors to stay 15 days. They can extend their
stay by a maximum of 14 days. The visa costs 105 Qatari riyals (Dh107).

Citizens of 33 countries can obtain joint-tourist visas entitling them to
visit Oman and Qatar.

Oman has taken a similar step to lure more visitors from the UAE. The move
came to support the upcoming Muscat Festival, set to begin on Friday, officials
 said.

"We will issue visas [for visitors] at border crossings and airports," said
Gazi Ahmad Qatan, Oman's tourism promotion officer in Dubai.

The Muscat Festival, which ends on February 18, is expected to attract two
million visitors, officials said.

Nationals from 63 countries are encouraged to apply for two types of visas -
a single-entry visa and a multiple-entry visa.
