COUNCIL TO DISCUSS ANTI-TERRORIST OPERATIONS IN NICE MOSCOW, February 9 (RIA Novosti) - The Russia-NATO Council is to hold its informal session at the defense-minister level in Nice, France. The session will open February 9 and also involves Russian Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov, RIA Novosti learned at the Defense Ministry. Mr. Ivanov is scheduled to fly to France February 9. Moreover, Mr. Ivanov will attend the 41st International Security Conference in Munich February 12, arriving from Nice. Mr. Ivanov will prioritize the issues of joint anti-terrorist operations, control over man-portable air-defense systems (MANPADS) and ways of enhancing troop-level tactical cohesion within the Russia-NATO Council's framework and military-reform cooperation during his French and German visits. Tactical cohesion seems quite topical as Russia is moving to establish its first-ever peacekeeping brigade in the Volga-Urals military district. Moreover, Russian and NATO Defense Ministers intend to discuss the situation in "problem" regions, such as Iraq and North Korea. Russia's consent to take part in the operation Active Endeavor (in the context of the successful Russia-NATO naval exercise in Italy's Gulf of Taranto) should be emphasized during the session of the Russia-NATO Council, RIA Novosti's reporter said. NATO Defense Ministers and Russia will discuss work to finalize an agreement on the status of military units and the Baltics' reluctance to okay an adapted CFE (Conventional Forces in Europe) Treaty, he added. Plans are also in place to discuss in detail security issues with regard to the non-proliferation of WMDs. -- A Nation's best defense is an educated citizenry. -- Thomas Jefferson ------------------------ Yahoo!
