Top Iraqi Terrorist Shihab Al-Sab'awi Tells of His Training in Syria
and Activity in Iraq (Longer Version)

The following are excerpts from the interrogation of Shihab Al-Sab'awi
the deputy commander of the Fateh Army terrorist organization in Iraq:

Interviewer: This is the third-in-command in this army, Lt. Colonel
Shihab Al-Saba'wi, deputy of 'Abdallah Hanna Klana, commander of the
Al-Fateh army. Shihab, I'd like you to tell us how you came to know
this criminal and about your first journey to Islamabad and training
there. Who supervised the training, and who was with you?

Shihab Al-Saba'wi: I first met 'Abdallah Klana, who is known as Abu
Bakr Actually, he approached me in a mosque, in 2001. He offered us
He told us he would arrange for us to go train in Islamabad for me,
'Abd al-Wahhab and for Muhannad He said: "You will benefit from it.
You'll approve your preparedness, develop your Jihad skills
gathering information, booby-trapping, explosions, kidnapping - this
sort of thing.

Interviewer: Did you carry out any Jihad operations during (Saddam's)
regime, or did you await instructions?

Shihab Al-Saba'wi: We waited for instructions and watched how the
situation was developing, since the American threats continued all
these years. We heard these threats, we heard that America was going
to occupy the country, and it made us prepare to fight Jihad against
the Americans and to prevent them from entering the country.

Interviewer: Where did you go after this training?

Shihab Al-Saba'wi: (Abu Bakr) arranged another course for me, 'Abd
Al-Wahhab and Muhannad a course in Latakiya, Syria, after the regime
fell. This course lasted for a month.

Interviewer: Who supervised this training?

Shihab Al-Saba'wi: There were Syrians there.

Interviewer: What kind of Syrians?

Shihab Al-Saba'wi: Syrian intelligence.

Interviewer: Syrian intelligence. Did you see Anas there at the time,
or maybe you didn't know him?

Shihab Al-Saba'wi: No, we didn't see him there.

Interviewer: What kind of training did you receive?

Shihab Al-Saba'wi: More or less the same kind of training as in
Islamabad, only more concentrated.
We trained in booby-trapping, explosions, and kidnappings, so when we
would return to Iraq we'd all begin to carry them out against the
American forces. Of course we were convinced that we must fight the
Americans. No Iraqi or Muslim will tolerate the occupation of their
land by an infidel.

Interviewer: When we were chatting a couple of hours ago, you
described a situation to me. I'd like you to recount it for my
superiors. You said to me: We received training in slaughtering, how
slaughtering must be carried out. What did the Syrian instructors use
to slaughter in front of you in order to teach you how to slaughter?

Shihab Al-Saba'wi: Animals. We didn't slaughter human beings in Syria.

Interviewer: They didn't slaughter human beings, but some Syrian
intelligence officers brought some animals to the camp and they told
you to imagine these animals were human beings that should be
slaughtered in this manner.

Shihab Al-Saba'wi: Yes.

Interviewer: Didn't you know that this was a premeditated plan to
carry out inhuman missions in Iraq?

Shihab Al-Saba'wi: At first we didn't imagine that this was the purpose.

Interviewer: When you returned to Iraq after this month of training
you lived in apartments rented by the Syrian government.

Shihab Al-Saba'wi: Yes.

Interviewer: The Syrian intelligence officers stayed at Muhannad's
house. He is the one who gave them shelter, protected them, looked
after their needs, and did whatever they asked.

Shihab Al-Saba'wi: Yes.

Interviewer: After that you went on your third trip, and the countdown
began. Who was your target, and what was your first operation?

Shihab Al-Saba'wi: At first, we were convinced that the target was the
Americans. So the operations targeted the Americans, which was easy at
first. It wasn't as difficult as recently. The Americans had Hummers,
Armored Personnel Carrieres, foot patrols in the streets all these
were targets.

Interviewer: What made you suddenly shift from attacking the
occupation forces to attacks on the National Guard, and where did
these instructions come from?

Shihab Al-Saba'wi: They came from Abdallah Abu Bakr, who received them
from Anas.

Interviewer: Anas, the Syrian officer?

Shihab Al-Saba'wi: Yes, the Syrian officer. Through Anas.

Interviewer: When you carried out these operations, you did so as the
deputy of this army?

Shihab Al-Saba'wi: Yes.

Interviewer: How many Emirs were at your command?

Shihab Al-Saba'wi: Seven Emirs.

Interviewer: What salary of each Emir?

Shihab Al-Saba'wi: $1,500

Interviewer: Where did you get the cars you gave people and squads?

Shihab Al-Saba'wi: The money came from Syria.

Interviewer: The money for the salaries?

Shihab Al-Saba'wi: From Syria.

Interviewer: As for the Emirs, can you tell me what each squad
specialized in?

Shihab Al-Saba'wi: Each squad had to know everything. Every squad had
to know how to use mortars, how to bomb, how to collect intelligence.
Each squad had to be independent. For example, Imad's squad
specialized in mortars, but it also knew how to bomb. The squad
members had to be proficient in everything, in order to be prepared
for any mission.

Interviewer: As the deputy commander of this army - how did you
someone become an Emir, so that his salary would rise to $1,500?

Shihab Al-Saba'wi: According to his qualifications

Interviewer: What exactly did he have to do to become an Emir?

Shihab Al-Saba'wi: More operations

Interviewer: According to the information the Syrian officer gave us,
the rank of Emir was only given after slaughtering ten people of more.
Shihab Al-Saba'wi: That is the number decided by the Syrians.

Interviewer: Did anyone become an Emir without slaughtering?

Shihab Al-Saba'wi: Whether Emir or not, he had to kill people in combat.

Interviewer: No, I'm talking about slaughtering, not combat. combat is
one thing, but as for slaughtering he had to slaughter.

Shihab Al-Saba'wi: Yes.

Interviewer: Some squad leaders said that when they would set out to
murder and slaughter, you would join them. Abd Al-Wahhab and some
squad leaders said the first slaughtering operation was done by you.

Shihab Al-Saba'wi: I supervised them, not all

Interviewer: But the first operation

Shihab Al-Saba'wi: Yes, the first operation

Interviewer: The first operation was done by you.

Shihab Al-Saba'wi: Yes.

Interviewer: According to our information, you yourself manufactured
bombs and car bombs, trained other squad members, and supervised them
directly.

Shihab Al-Saba'wi: I would guide and supervise

Interviewer: And what about the manufacturing?

Shihab Al-Saba'wi: I would supervise and help those who didn't know how.

Interviewer: We found traces of TNT and gunpowder in the mosque. How
many times did you make these explosives in the mosque?

Shihab Al-Saba'wi: Many times.

Interviewer: How many slaughtering operations were carried out under
your supervision?

Shihab Al-Saba'wi: Ten or eleven.

Interviewer: These were carried out under your supervision?
Shihab Al-Saba'wi: Yes.

Interviewer: How many assassinations or shootings were carried out at
your order?

Shihab Al-Saba'wi: Five or six.

Interviewer: In your opinion, is it permitted to make explosives and
bombs in a mosque? Isn't a mosque a sacred place?
Shihab Al-Saba'wi: Mosques are sacred, but we believed we were
fighting Jihad against the Americans and the infidel forces occupying
our country. You must fight them with any possible means.
