Project aids mine clearance
By Rob O'Neill
March 1, 2005

The Australian Defence Force will spend $600,000 to add mine-
clearance abilities to its sonar modelling systems, increasing the
effectiveness and speed of its mine-clearance activities.
The project, by Sydney-based Thales Underwater Systems, will extend
the Tactical Environmental Support System 2 (TESS2) - which fine-
tunes sonar systems through sophisticated modelling of ocean
environments - and integrate it with the Australian Navy's Mine
Warfare Combat System Centre.
Project manager Janice Sendt says the extension adds high-frequency
mine-hunting to TESS2's capabilities, allowing the modelling of mine
clearance rates and the optimisation of "Q" routes, or routes through
an ocean minefield. ……… Early versions of the system modelled low-
frequency, passive sonar, effectively the ability to listen to what
is happening underwater. Later versions enabled the modelling of
active sonar, the ability to listen for a ping or other sound
transmitted and then bounced off an underwater object. ...
