Explosion at Theatre Wounds Six in Qatar

DOHA (Reuters) - An explosion at a small theater near a British school in
Qatar wounded six people attending a play on Saturday, a Qatari official
said.

"There was an explosion in the cafeteria inside the theater building. Six
people, Arabs and foreigners, were slightly wounded and are being treated in
hospital," Brigadier General Ahmad al-Hayki of the Qatari Interior Ministry
told Qatar-based satellite television Al Jazeera.

"We are still investigating the cause of the blast," he said, declining to
speculate on whether it had been an accident or an attack.

Al Qaeda militants have staged attacks in neighboring Saudi Arabia and
Kuwait but Qatar, a key U.S. ally, has seen no Islamist violence.

Qatar hosts the U.S. military's Central Command and was a launch pad for the
U.S.-led invasion of Iraq (news

two years ago on Sunday.

An Al Jazeera correspondent on the scene said around 100 people had been
inside the one-storey Doha Players theater in the Qatari capital, Doha.

A security guard at the British school told Reuters the blast shattered
several windows in the school, which was closed at the time, and that a
ceiling collapsed in an auditorium.

He said around 40 teachers who live in the school compound were evacuated
but that no one was hurt.

"There has been an explosion opposite the Doha English Speaking School," a
spokesman for the British Foreign Office in London said.

"We have staff that are on their way there now to see if there are any
casualties or what casualties there are. But they haven't had any reports on
the casualties at this stage."

A Reuters witness said windows of nearby cars had been blown out by the
force of the blast. Firefighters earlier put out a blaze.
