The marines were traveling in the country's southern jungles near the borders with Peru and Ecuador when they were attacked by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, navy commander Adm. Mauricio Soto told a news conference. The Marxist rebel army known as FARC emerged from a long period of relative inactivity this year and killed more than 50 government troops in February. It was an embarrassment for the armed forces, which had been saying the rebels were on the retreat after four decades of guerrilla war. President Alvaro Uribe, set to run for re-election next year, owes his 70-percent approval rating to tough policies against the FARC including more aggressive military action. The FARC has its origins in a communist peasant militia but has grown to number 17,000 thanks to funding from kidnapping and cocaine. Polls show rebels have little support in Colombia's cities but are able to move around fairly easily in impoverished rural areas effectively abandoned by the state.
