Kenyan authorities 'tortured terrorism suspects'
By Africa correspondent Zoe Daniel

Amnesty International has accused the authorities in Kenya of
torturing people suspected of involvement in a terrorist bombing in
the country in 2002.
The Amnesty International report is based on interviews with suspects
held after the bombing of an Israeli owned hotel near the Kenyan city
of Mombasa in 2002.
The human rights group says one suspect was given electric shocks,
others were beaten and some were held for up to 48 days without access
to lawyers.
Suspects claim the abuses were carried out by Kenyan and international
investigators.
Amnesty says various unconfirmed reports point to American and Israeli
agents.

Four Kenyans have been charged over the Al Qaeda suicide bombing which
killed 15 Israeli tourists.

Further condemnation

Human rights groups have condemned a Kenyan government order that
anyone who produces an illegal gun should be shot dead.
Kenya's internal security minister has vowed to crack down on illegal
firearms and earlier this week ordered that those with illegal weapons
should be shot.

He says violent crime in the capital Nairobi must be stopped and that
police should shoot to kill.
But human rights organisations say shooting people is not the answer
to solving security issues in Kenya.
They say that while crime is increasing, people still deserve to be
presumed innocent until proven guilty - even if they are carrying a
weapon.
