South Korea resumes poultry exports to Japan

SEOUL - South Korea has resumed the exports of chicken and other poultry
to Japan, the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry said Thursday.

The measures come after Seoul and Tokyo agreed last month that if no
outbreak of bird influenza is discovered within 90 days of the last one,
Japan would lift its import ban.

Japan halted quarantine inspection of all poultry imported from South
Korea in December after the discovery of the low-pathogenic H5N2 avian
influenza virus at a duck farm in Gwangju, 329 kilometers southwest of
Seoul.

The H5N2 strain does not spread to humans and is different from the
deadly bird flu that spread through Asia last year and took some human
lives.

"Government veterinary officials have kept a close eye on further
outbreaks up until February, when avian influenza is most likely, and
have provided related data in a timely manner to Japan," a ministry
official said.

He also said that since the 90 days passed with no further problems,
Tokyo has decided to allow imports. The official added that his Japanese
counterparts had been satisfied with quarantine and cleanup efforts by
South Korea, including the swift destruction of all ducks that had been
affected.

Bird influenza usually occurs during the winter months, and with the
advent of spring there is less likelihood that another outbreak will be
found, the veterinary expert said.

The resumption of exports is expected to ease hardships encountered by
South Korean exporters of chicken, duck and other poultry in the past
few months, he said.

The discovery of the bird influenza caused last year's poultry exports
to Japan to fall to 500 tons worth US$23.14 million.
