NATO to Send Spy Plane to Rome for Pope's Funeral BRUSSELS (Reuters) - NATO will send an AWACS surveillance plane to Rome to protect Italian air space during the Pope's funeral, alliance spokesman James Appathurai said on Thursday. "This is being done at the request of the Italian government to help provide security at what is possibly an unprecedented gathering of world leaders," Appathurai said. "NATO will deploy an Airborne Warning and Control System aircraft and the purpose of it is to give the Italian government visibility of what is going on in their air space," he added. AWACS aircraft monitor air space from onboard computers. Appathurai said if they spotted anything suspicious, any necessary action would be taken by the Italian authorities. NATO said in a statement the aerial surveillance missions would be flown from a Forward Operating Base in Italy. One AWACS operating at 30,000 feet can provide radar coverage out to a distance greater than 200 miles (320 km) and generate a clear picture of aircraft movements from high to low altitude. Kings, queens and heads of state and government from across the world are descending on Rome for Friday's funeral of Pope John Paul, who died on Saturday. ------------------------ Yahoo!
