Al Qaida go home: Threats against Saudis in Sunni triangle having effect
It's getting uncomfortable to be an Al Qaida operative in Iraq. Iraqi sources said Sunni leaders, backed by pro-Saddam Hussein insurgents, have been pressuring Al Qaida-aligned foreign nationals to leave the Sunni Triangle. The operatives have been warned to leave immediately or face death. The threats have been targeted toward Saudi nationals in the Sunni Triangle. Iraqis are angered by the Wahabi lifestyle and the Saudi disregard for Iraqi customs. As a result, posters have appeared in several Sunni Triangle cities warning foreign Arab volunteers to get out. The pressure on the foreigners, particularly the Saudis, has been heaviest in the mosques in such cities as Fallujah and Ramadi. The foreigners have not taken the threats lightly. Many Saudis and other nationals have left Sunni cities for the countryside. Others have returned to Saudi Arabia or Syria. U.S. intelligence officials are trying to capitalize on the warnings against the foreign operatives. The military hopes Sunnis will begin to inform on the Al Qaida-aligned foreign nationals in a move that could help round up their commanders. Iraqi sources don't expect the Sunni campaign to lead to the exodus of all the foreign fighters. The fighters continue to have a powerful ally in Abu Mussib Al Zarqawi, regarded as the most lethal insurgent in Iraq. Indeed, Al Qaida has plastered the walls of some cities with posters accusing Sunnis of joining the Iraqi military and police. http://www.geostrategy-direct.com [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] ------------------------ Yahoo!
