New unit to survey foreign spies

A new counter-espionage unit has been set up by Australia's national
security service, ASIO, to improve the country's surveillance of foreign
spies.

Chinese and Russian spies attempting to infiltrate Australia's military
secrets will become a target of the new ASIO unit, The Australian
reported.

Concern that Australia remained a focus for foreign spies had prompted
the move, the paper said.

In recent years, Chinese spies searching for information on military
related technology and strategic policy secrets have aggressively
targeted Australia.

The number of Chinese agents in Australia now outnumbered the ranks of
Russian spies that dominated Canberra in the Cold War, government
sources told The Australian.

"China would be the biggest now by a fair way ... they have built up
their capabilities over the last 10 years and are more aggressive in
their activities," a source said.

"Espionage is the forgotten side of the intelligence game but it remains
alive and well."
