Australian embassy bomber suspect faces trial

June 3, 2005 - 5:54PM

Indonesian judges today refused to drop terrorism charges against an Islamic
militant and ordered him to stand trial for his alleged role in the bombing
of the Australian embassy in Jakarta last year.

Chief judge Rocky Darmawan said prosecutors had prepared "complete, clear
and dilligent" charges against Iwan Darmawan Mutho.

The 29-year-old Mutho, also known as Rois, was accused of taking part in the
plot that led to the bombing of the embassy in September 2004, in which up
to 11 people, including the suicide bomber died.

"The indictment has fulfilled all necessary requirements," Darmawan said
during a hearing at the south Jakarta district court.

Rois, a member of a group seeking to set up a Muslim state in Indonesia,
allegedly worked together with fugitive Malaysian terror suspects Azahari
Husin and Noordin Mohammad Top to plan the attack.

Prosecutors said Rois was also a deputy commander of a militant group called
the Islamic State of Indonesia and had undergone training in a Muslim rebel
camp in the southern Philippines.

The indictment said Rois originally met Noordin and Azahari in the first
half of 2004 and that during one meeting in August, Azahari had told him of
his intention to attack the embassy.

Azahari and Noordin are also wanted for the key roles in several other
attacks including the October 2002 Bali bombings and the bombing of
Jakarta's JW Marriot hotel in August 2003.

The Bali bombings killed 202 mostly foreign holidaymakers while the Marriott
strike left 12 people dead. The three attacks have been blamed on the
al-Qaeda-linked Jemaah Islamiah regional extremist network.

The trial of Rois was adjourned until June 9 to hear testimony from
witnesses.
