palestine-info.co.uk Daily News Hamas responding to Straw's statement refuses to give up arms By Jun 8, 2005, 09:31 Gaza - The Islamic Resistance Movement, Hamas, has asserted that it would not surrender its arms or give up resistance in return for negotiations with Europe. Mushir Al-Masri, official Hamas spokesman in the Gaza Strip, told reporters that his Movement would never surrender arms as long as Israeli occupation of Palestinian lands persisted. Hamas is committed to the calming down but would retaliate to "Zionist crimes", Masri elaborated. Commenting on British foreign secretary Jack Straw's statements that his government would start talks with Hamas in the event it dropped its weapons, Masri said that such statements were not accepted. Straw further revealed in his statement that British diplomats had held contacts with Palestinian officials connected to Hamas. He told the BBC that his government would not deal with the Hamas leadership unless they revoked their charter, which stipulated destruction of Israel, and renounced violence. The US administration, for its part, had also hinted that it might hold contacts with Hamas-affiliated politicians in view of the Movement's growing influence in the Palestinian arena.
