Egypt releases Muslim Brotherhood members

ISN SECURITY WATCH (20/06/05) - Egyptian State Prosecution on
Saturday
released on bail 463 members of the Muslim Brotherhood militant
group who were
arrested in May.

Police are still holding 43 of the suspects in custody.

According to Egyptian officials, the suspected militants were
arrested for
illegally staging demonstrations in the capital, Cairo, and other
regions
across the country.

The men are charged with membership in a banned group, attacking
police, and
disseminating propaganda. The indictment against them also said they
had
chanted provocative slogans and caused traffic to slow during
demonstrations
last month.

In May, the Muslim Brotherhood held nationwide demonstrations
calling for an
end to the government's Emergency Law, which the group says
restricts
political activity.

The government has defended the law - which it used to arrest and
some
Brotherhood members and keep them in custody without charges -
saying its
purpose was only to combat terrorism and drug trafficking.

The Muslim Brotherhood emerged in 1928 and was banned by the
Egyptian
government in the 1950s. It is seeking to establish Sharia law in
Egypt. It
claims to be non-violent.

The group has accused the government of failing to seriously tackle
reforms
and restricting political opposition from running in the country's
first multi-
candidate elections, planned for September.

Meanwhile, Egyptian authorities on Friday arrested two men who were
passing
out leaflets expressing opposition to another term for President
Hosni Mubarak
or a transfer of power to his son, Gamal Mubarak, news agencies
reported.
