Armed police search hospital 16:14pm 21st July 2005 Police cordoned off London's University College Hospital near Warren Street Tube station after a series of explosions and attempted explosions at four sites across the capital. Armed police entered the hospital shortly after the explosions. There was a rumour that staff at University College Hospital had been passed an internal memo asking them to look out for a black, possibly Asian man, around 6ft 2ins tall, with wires protruding from a hole in his blue top. They were instructed to call 999 if they saw the man, according to the report. He described this idea as "absolute rumour", adding that if any memo had been sent he would have seen it. Prof Ryan, who led medical teams treating the injured from the July 7 bombings, said armed police had passed quietly through the hospital. "We saw armed police going through the hospital. They had a very quick patrol round," he said. "We are carrying on working as normal. We have quietly and serenely been seeing patients while we have been locked away in our ivory tower." Police were still at the scene, he said. Outside University College Hospital, one patient described scenes inside when armed police entered. Fidelma Fitzgerald was waiting for an appointment when the drama started. "I have never seen so many police in my life with guns who are all inside the hospital. "I saw police running around with guns. That was very worrying. "I was in a treatment room for quite a while, about two and a half hours." Ms Fitzgerald said that hospital staff seemed "very nervous". She said she thought around 30 armed police were in the hospital while she was waiting. -------------------------- Want to discuss this topic?
