Kerala tracks Iranian passport forger
- By K. Venugopal

Thiruvananthapuram, July 25: Sleuths of the Kerala police are searching for
an elusive Iranian who arranged fake passports for a fellow Iranian and an
Afghan who were planning to fly to London.

Jumar Khan, 23, of Kabul, and Syed Hashmi, 47, of Iran, were caught at Doha
airport with fake passports and were deported back to Thiruvananthapuram
last Thursday. Jumar, who was travelling on an Israeli passport, and Hashmi,
who used a South African passport, were planning to catch a flight to
London. Their arrest caused a flutter in the context of the London blasts.
The anonymous Iranian, whom the police are searching for, helped them get
fake passports and apparently stayed on in Thiruvananthapuram to see them
off.

Both of them easily slipped through immigration checks at
Thiruvan-anthapuram airport and this has caused much consternation among
intelligence authorities. On interrogation, the two men revealed that they
were told that Thiruvananthapuram was the easiest transit point.

The police has not bought their story that they were travelling to London to
find better jobs. "However, we have not been able to find out whether they
have any terrorist links," said a police officer.

Hashmi has been staying in India for the past nine years and Jumar had come
to the country from Kabul three months ago. Interrogators have found many
contradictions in their statements.

Meanwhile, the CPI(M)-led Opposition walked out of the Assembly protesting
against the state government's lackadaisical attitude towards the issue.
Chief minister Oommen Chandy said a sub-inspector of the immigration cell
was suspended over the issue.
