Yet another failure of the UK security services. Bruce How did he get as far as Italy? By MICHAEL SEAMARK, Daily Mail
Police were last night trying to discover how the suspected suicide bomber caught in Rome managed to slip out of Britain. Somalia-born Hussain Ahmed Osman, 27, was arrested at a relative's home by Italian police after a mobile phone was tracked. His brother-in-law lives in the city. The father of three is suspected of trying to blow up a Tube train in Shepherds Bush. He is expected to be flown back to London. Osman is understood to have travelled from London to Paris, then on to Milan and Rome, but it is not yet clear whether he took a train, boat or plane out of Britain. Embarkation control was controversially halted in 1998. Emergency checks on all passengers leaving the country had been imposed after the July 7 suicide bombings, but were lifted 72 hours before the abortive attack on July 21. They were reimposed within hours, with immigration officers checking the passports of every single person leaving the country. But Osman may have already gone. Reports earlier this week suggested one member of the cell may have escaped by coach, travelling from London's Victoria Station via Dover and on through France and possibly to Amsterdam. Once in Europe, he would have been able to travel freely between countries. Armed police raided his South London home on Wednesday night hours after a new CCTV image of him released by Scotland Yard was identified by neighbours. His Ethiopian-born partner, Yeshi Girma, two other women and a boy were arrested at Blair House, on the Stockwell Gardens Estate, on suspicion of harbouring a fugitive. The couple had lived in the housing association property for at least six years. Their children are aged six, two and four months. Like fellow suspects Omar and Ibrahim, Osman arrived in Britain seeking sanctuary from the war-ravaged Horn of Africa, and apparently lived on benefits. Osman is believed to have boarded a half-full Hammersmith and City Line at Westbourne Park Tube station in West London, heading towards Shepherd's Bush. He allegedly attempted to detonate the bomb shortly after passing BBC Television Centre. Passengers heard a bang and saw Osman on the floor. Business analyst Abisha Moyo said he was lying with his eyes closed and his arms outstretched in a crucifixion pose. He noticed "some gooey lard" oozing out of the rucksack. Mr Moyo asked him: "Are you all right, mate?" Passengers screamed as the suspected bomber - wires visible underneath his England T-shirt - came to his senses and climbed out of the carriage, escaping down the track. Police issued a new CCTV image captured shortly afterwards of Osman, by then wearing a white vest, aboard a number 220 bus heading for Wandsworth, South London. Within hours, officers raided the Stockwell address - not far from the Tube station where Jean Charles de Menezes was shot dead by police - but neighbours said Osman had not been seen in the past fortnight and had recently gone aboard. Residents said several men regularly visited the ground floor flat, and they thought suspect Muktar Said Ibrahim was among them. The home of Girma's mother, Roman Melaku was raided by armed police last Friday night in connection with the suicide bomb attacks. Embarkation controls will remain in place until Special Branch decides they are no longer necessary. _____ Find this story at http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/news/news.html?in_article_id= 357605&in_page_id=1770 C2005 Associated New Media FAIR USE NOTICE: All original content and/or articles and graphics in this message are copyrighted, unless specifically noted otherwise. Rather, "fair use" is determined by the overall extent to which the cited work does or does not substantially satisfy the criteria in their totality.
