J'lem police detain senior Hamas cleric outside Temple Mount

mosque By The Associated Press

Jerusalem police detained a senior cleric in the Hamas militant
group for questioning Saturday in connection with alleged incitement
he preached at a Jerusalem mosque.

Hamad Bitawi was taken into custody outside the Temple Mount mosque,
Jerusalem police spokesman Shmuel Ben-Ruby said.

The preaching took place several weeks ago at the shrine, but he
wasn't detained at the time, Ben-Ruby said.

Ben-Ruby wouldn't offer details of the alleged incitement. He said
Bitawi also was detained because he isn't authorized to be in
Jerusalem.
