This Week in Islam
Weekly Column for 8/01/05

TROP ( 'The Religion of Peace' ) recently had the opportunity to be on
Israel National Radio, as an invited guest of talk show host Tovia Singer.
One of the points raised by the host was that the animosity towards Israel
in the Muslim world seems correlated with proximity. There is greater hatred
of the Jews in places like Syria and Saudi Arabia than in Indonesia or even
Iraq.

One reason for this is that the Arab people in those countries surrounding
Israel do not enjoy the economic prosperity or political freedom that Israel
has. Since proximity enhances contrast, it becomes necessary for Arab
leaders to manufacture the Israeli scapegoat, and use hatred as a
distraction from the legitimate demands that that their own people might
otherwise express.

Part of the con game, as well, is making an issue out of "land" by
pretending as if the Palestinians have not had ample opportunity in the last
60 years to get on with their lives. In fact, there is plenty of land in the
Middle East, over 99% of which is controlled by Muslim countries. The
Palestinians are simply being used as pawns.

Even the very phrase "land for peace" is loaded and inaccurate. Land is not
equal to peace. Peace is equal to peace. Israelis have earned the right to
live in peace because they continuously offer peace to the Palestinians,
even in the face of relentless barbarism.
