UPDATED: 09:05, October 18, 2005 US official says terrorist groups deploy new tactics Terrorist groups are deploying new tactics which will pose a greater challenge to the international community in fighting terrorism, a United States official said on Monday. Organizations, such as al-Qaeda and Jemaah Islamiah, were now using new methods to launch their attacks, said Henry Crumpton, coordinator for counterterrorism at the Department of State of the United States who was on a one-day visit to Malaysia. Some of these organizations were splintering and becoming smaller, but the weapons they used were more powerful, Crumpton told reporters at Malaysia's administrative center Putrajaya. Terrorist groups were evolving into micro targets with macro impact and were going to pose challenges across borders, he said. These new trends made it more difficult for intelligence collection and policy making, he noted. Crumpton met with Malaysian Foreign Minister Syed Hamid Albar earlier Monday and both parties discussed various pressing regional issues ranging from security in the Strait of Malacca, conflict in southern Thailand, problems in southern Philippines and terrorism, local media said. He said the only way to tackle the growing global terrorism threats was through close cooperation among countries. Commenting on whether any external forces were involved in the conflict in southern Thailand, the US official said that there was no international linkage and it was just a local concern.
