2 sniper suspects taken; cops swarm building
Wednesday, October 19, 2005 By MICHAELANGELO CONTE The JERSEY JOURNAL STAFF WRITER A Conrail worker was shot in the back by a BB gun-wielding rooftop sniper yesterday in an incident that shut down a Hudson-Bergen Light Rail station in Jersey City and all three Bayonne stations, officials said. The victim was working near the intersection of Princeton and Linden avenues, where Conrail train tracks run parallel to the light rail line, officials said. He was not seriously injured, police said. Police arrested Rosa Deldalle, 33, and Andy Laroche, 23, both of Princeton Avenue, and charged them with aggravated assault and weapons offenses, Police Sgt. Edgar Martinez said. Inside the apartment they share police found a BB pistol and a BB rifle, Martinez said. Police say the Conrail worker was fired on at 4:21 p.m. from the roof of the four-story building where Laroche and Deldalle live. The victim was not seriously injured, Martinez said. Jersey City police called in a State Police helicopter to check rooftops before sending officers into the area, Martinez said. When they zeroed in on the building, officers in riot gear and armed with automatic weapons stormed in, securing the building floor by floor and interviewing residents, Martinez said. When they found Laroche and Deldalle and the guns, they took them into custody, Martinez said. NJ Transit police said light rail equipment has been damaged by what appeared to be BBs in that area in the past and they are going through records to see if additional charges might be brought against the pair, Martinez said. At the request of Jersey City police, NJ Transit suspended light rail service for two hours to the Richard Street Station in Jersey City and to all three Bayonne stations, NJ Transit spokesman Dan Stessel said last night. NJ Transit provided bus service at those stations until they reopened about 6:15 p.m., Stessel said. [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] ------------------------ Yahoo!
