Analyst: Hizbullah threat equals or exceeds that of Al Qaida

WASHINGTON — Hizbullah has expanded it global foundation and could
open a military front in any Arab or Iranian war against Israel.
A leading U.S. analyst told the House subcommittee on Middle East and
Central Asia on Oct. 18 that Hizbullah has become a significant
military threat to Israel. Ilan Berman, author of a new book on Iran
and vice president of the American Foreign Policy Council, told the
subcommittee that Hizbullah has become even more powerful than Al Qaida.

Hizbullah has bolstered its influence in several global regions, he
told the House panel, citing Africa, South America and Europe.
"The result is that, according to some government estimates, the
threat from Iran's principal terrorist proxy now equals — or even
exceeds — that of Al Qaida," Berman said.

[In Tampa, Fla., a Palestinian identified as the head of the Islamic
Jihad in North America was acquitted in a federal court of charges
that he established an insurgency cell in Florida. Sami Al Arian, a
former professor at the University of South Florida, was found not
guilty after the jury deadlocked on nine counts.]

"Over the past two years, large-scale missile deliveries from Iran —
in collusion with Syria — have substantially expanded the threat posed
by Hizbullah to northern Israel, and created the possibility for
Teheran to open a northern front against the Israeli government in the
event of a diplomatic or military crisis," Berman told the subcommittee.
Berman was referring to Iranian shipments of a range of Iranian and
Syrian rockets and missiles to southern Lebanon.

Israel has estimated that Hizbullah has accumulated up to 15,000
rockets and missiles.

The Hizbullah threat was reportedly a major topic in Israeli-U.S.
strategic talks during the first week of December in Washington.
Israel asserted Iran has ordered Hizbullah to strike strategic
facilities in the Jewish state.
