Nervousness in Cairo & AL about U.S. intentions and recognition that Turkey is a pivotable nation in any actions against Syria or Iran as well as a key factor in the viability and protection of a Kurdish autonomous zone in Iraq against the Shia.

In a joint news conference with Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmad Abul Ghaitt after bilateral talks, Gul said that the American officials' recent visit to Ankara had only dealt with relations between the US and Turkey as allies. For his part, the Egyptian official encouraged Syria to keep on cooperation with the international committee investigating the assassination of former Lebanese premier Rafiq Hariri in Beirut last February. He said the international community should be "flexible" when dealing with Lebanese-Syrian issues, indicating that Egypt fully supports the Lebanese security and independence. The Turkish foreign minister is part of the delegation of Turkish President Ahmad Necdet Sezer who arrived in Cairo earlier. Gul had also met with the Arab League's Secretary General Amr Mouse over the conditions in Iraq and the Arab-Israeli conflict. He said talks with Mousa dealt with several hot regional topics including the Syrian-Lebanese file and the Palestinian issue, confirming his full support to the Arab initiative for conciliation in Iraq. The Turkish senior official, however, called for not being annoyed from the Turkish-Israeli relations, underlining the fact that Turkey is not the only Middle Eastern country maintaining relations with Tel Aviv. For his part, Mousa told the press after the talks that Turkey backs the Arab initiative for conciliation in Iraq, indicating that both the Arab League (AL) and Ankara are concerned about the current conditions in the war-torn Arab country. He also said that Cairo, Turkey and the AL all share identical visions regarding the extreme importance of getting rid of all weapons of mass destructions in the Middle East. Egypt and Turkey are scheduled to sign a joint free trade zone agreement on Tuesday. The agreement will be signed between the Egyptian and Turkish trade ministers and attended by Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and his Turkish counterpart. The agreement is to pave the way for the establishment of the Euro- Med Free Trade Zone by 2010. (end) az. ------------------------ Yahoo!
