FM Livni to German Chancellor: Add Hizbullah to terrorist list
(Communicated by the Foreign Minister's Bureau)

Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni met today (Monday, 30 Jan. 2006) with German
Chancellor Angela Merkel and conveyed Israel's position in light of the
results of the recent Palestinian Authority elections. Minister Livni told
Chancellor Merkel that democracy by its very nature cannot purify
terrorist
organizations.
Livni said that the reasons for the Palestinians' vote for Hamas are not
relevant, since this terrorist organization would ultimately lead the
Palestinian Authority. The foreign minister called upon the international
community to place firm demands before the Palestinians to disarm
Hamas, to
annul its covenant calling for the destruction of the State of Israel, to
abandon violence, and to recognize all the agreements signed between
Israel
and the Palestinian Authority.
In a discussion of Hizbullah, Minister Livni stressed the close ties
between
Iran and Syria and terrorist organizations, particularly Hamas and
Hizbullah. Livni emphasized the many similarities between Hamas and
Hizbullah, despite which one of them is recognized as a terrorist
organization in Europe, while the second has won legitimacy as a political
organization.
Minister Livni asked Chancellor Merkel to take action to include Hizbullah
on Europe's list of terrorist organizations, like Hamas.
Livni pointed out that the hopes of the international community that
Hizbullah would abandon terrorism upon its entry into Lebanese
politics had
been disappointed. She called upon the international community not to
legitimize Hamas by permitting it to operate on two fronts, terrorism and
politics.
