Fearing strike, Iran shuffles its mobile missile launchers every 24 hours

LONDON — Iran, concerned over an Israeli or U.S. attack, has ordered
the redeployment of its Shihab-3 intermediate-range missile force.

Western intelligence sources said the Islamic Revolutionary Guard
Corps has received orders to move Shihab-3 launchers in an attempt to
prevent their destruction by an Israeli or U.S. air strike. The
sources said the launchers were relocated to positions near the Iraqi
border closer to U.S. military positions around Baghdad.
"The IRGC has been placed on war-footing," an intelligence source
said. "The Shihab-3 units have been alerted to the prospect of an
immediate strike."

On Feb. 1, Iranian Defense Minister Mustafa Najar said the military
was ready to repel any air attack. Najar made his remarks during a
tour of an air base in Bushehr, home of Iran's first nuclear facility.
"An attack against Iran's peaceful nuclear facilities would be met by
a quick and decisive response by the country's armed forces," Najar said.
Najar did not discuss the redeployment of the Shihab-3 batteries. But
sources said the IRGC issued an order to the Shihab-3 missile units on
Jan. 19. The units were ordered to move the Shihab launchers every 24
hours.

Over the past 12 days, Shihab missile launchers have moved every night
to a different position, the sources said. The launchers remain within
a 35-kilometer radius, apparently within range of their command and
control centers.

The IRGC has also moved advanced Shihab-3 units to the provinces of
Kermanshah and Hamedan. The sources said reserve mobile launchers were
relocated to the provinces of Fars and Isfahan.
Iran is believed to have at least six Shihab-3 brigades. They contain
both the standard Shihab-3, with a range of between 1,300 and 1,500
kilometers, as well as the enhanced Shihab, with a range of 2,000
kilometers.
