 2006 AFP
LISBON (AFP) - Portuguese police said Monday they had detained an
Islamic extremist who is one of the Netherland's most wanted men
because of his suspected links to terrorist activities.

The man, who was not named, took part in terrorist training camps in
Yemen and is thought to have contacts with the alleged network of
terrorists known as the "Hofstad" group, police said in a statement.
He was one of three men detained in Portugal over the past week who
are wanted in the Netherlands in connection with a shooting late last
year at a Rotterdam nightclub which left three dead and three more
seriously injured.
The three men are believed to have opened fire inside the
establishment on another group with whom they allegedly had illegal
dealings, striking several innocent bystanders.

Police did not give the nationalities of the three men.
Two of the men were arrested on Sunday in Amadora, a suburb of Lisbon
that is home to a large immigrant population, while a third was
detained a few days earlier as he prepared to flee to an undisclosed
African country, police said.
"One of the three pulled a loaded, illegal gun at the time of his
detention," the police statement said.

The Netherlands has already sought the extradition of the man who is
suspected of having attended the Yemen training camps, it said, adding
that the suspect is a convert to Islam.

Fourteen young Muslims, mostly of north African origin, are currently
on trial in the Netherlands for alleged membership of the Hofstad group.
The name Hofstad is a nickname for the Dutch city of The Hague where
several of the men were arrested.
