Syria improves its Scud D missile with help from North Korea

After three years of development, Syria has significantly enhanced its
Scud D medium-range missile. The Scud D, first provided by North Korea
in 2001, has been upgraded with Pyongyang's help and has achieved
greater range and accuracy.

The first evidence of a Scud D upgrade program came at a test in May
2005 when the missile fell into neighboring Turkey. The CIA, with help
from other intelligence services, examined the missile and discovered
components that were not in the original North Korean model.

"Some of the components were from China and were meant to improve the
guidance system," an intelligence source said.

The improved Scud D has a separating warhead and range of 700
kilometers. This is about 100 kilometers more than the first missiles
supplied by Pyongyang.

Another improvement involves the warhead. Intelligence sources said
Damascus has constructed a warhead that could deliver chemical
weapons, including VX nerve gas. A similar warhead was developed for
the Scud C, with a range of 500 kilometers.
