US to India: Iran not a reliable partner

NEW DELHI: The US on Monday said that although it was up to India to decide
on the proposed Iran-Pakistan-India gas pipeline project, Washington
considers Iran to be 'not a reliable partner'.

"Our experience with Iran makes us realise that it is not a reliable
partner," US Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia Richard
Boucher said here.

Instead, he suggested and supported making Afghanistan a place for transit.
"We think by opening up Afghanistan and making it a place for transit, we
have made a positive change," the visiting US official added.

The US is backing the Turkmenistan-Afghanisatan-Pakistan gas pipeline
project and its possible extension to India as an alternative to the
Iran-Pakistan-India pipeline.

Boucher, however, added that it was for India to decide whether to go ahead
with the tri-nation pipeline project based on commercial viability and its
own experience of working with Tehran.
