Iran on Tuesday said its response to a package of incentives offered by the
world's six powers (5+1 Group) in early June would be in proportion to
Europe's demeanor.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid-Reza Asefi's remarks came as he spoke to
reporters on the sidelines of an open session of Majlis.
A package of incentives was drawn up by the five permanent UN Security
Council members -- Britain, France, the United States, China and Russia --
plus Germany (Group 5+1) and offered to Iran by European Union foreign
policy chief Javier Solana on June 6 in exchange for suspension of its
uranium enrichment activities.
Iran has said it was still studying the package and would give its response
by August 22.
"Europe would do well to show logic and reason and avoid artificiality in
dealing with Iran's nuclear case," Asefi said.
He insisted that parties to the nuclear dispute go back to its main path in
resolving it.
He maintained that Iran will not be pressured or threated into making a
decision, and cautioned Europe to avoid use of threats.
Asked about the possibility of a return to Russia's proposal that it enrich
uranium in behalf of Iran, the spokesman said the issue was not which plan
would be acceptable but continuity in the original path taken to resolve the
conflict.
Pointing to US President George W Bush's criticism of Iran as being opposed
to democracy in the region, he added: "Bush is entitled to his views just as
anyone can ask how he became US president through cheating."
Washington, Asefi pointed out, has good relations with certain countries
which do not practice democracy.
On the possibility of the UN Security Council passing a second resolution
deploying multinational forces to defend Lebanon alongside Lebanese forces,
he said resolutions of the Security Council are a dime-a-dozen.
"It passed 1,100 resolutions in a period of less than 20 years since its
adoption of Resolution 598 ending the Iraq-imposed war on Iran. Everybody
knows that only a few serious resolutions will be enough to establish peace
and security in the world."
Asefi further rejected rumors saying foreign banks refuse to open bank
accounts for Iranians, saying "Iran's financial sector is active outside the
country although it may be facing technical problems."
