Lebanese PM says Canadian position on Mid-East conflict not helpful MONTREAL -- Lebanese Prime Minister Fuad Saniora criticized Canada on Monday for its support of Israel during the recent conflict in the Middle East. After meeting with three Canadian opposition MPs touring Lebanon, Saniora told Radio-Canada that he was particularly upset at Prime Minister Stephen Harper's declaration that Israel's bombardment was a "measured response" to the kidnapping of Israeli soldiers by Hezbollah. "They could see what a crime the Israelis have made against Lebanon and against humanity," Saniora said. "This is what you call a measured response?" Saniora said the rest of the world found the action disproportionate and he said Canada could do a better job of supporting Lebanon, both politically and in terms of humanitarian aid. His comments come in the midst of a controversy over comments by the Canadian MPs touring his country. Liberal MP Borys Wrzesnewskyj, Bloc Quebecois MP Maria Mourani et New Democrat MP Peggy Nash arrived in Lebanon last Friday on the trip organized by National Council on Canada-Arab Relations. The group came under fire after Wrzesnewskyj was quoted in some newspaper reports Monday saying Hezbollah should be removed from Ottawa's official list of terrorist organizations. Wrzesnewskyj denied the reports. The Ontario MP said he favours changing Canadian laws that forbid contact with known terrorist groups. He said the law undermines efforts to seek lasting peace between Israel and Hezbollah guerrillas after a brutal 33-day war. But Hezbollah's terrorist status should not change, he said in an interview from Lebanon. Saniora said he opposes the inclusion of Hezbollah on the Canadian list of terrorist organizations. "These terms are not helpful," the Lebanese prime minister said. [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] -------------------------- Want to discuss this topic?
