The second-in-command of al-Qa'eda in Iraq has been captured and has given up secrets of the organisation's operations, the Iraqi government said yesterday. It said that Hamid Juma Faris al-Suaidi, who is also known as Abu Humam or Abu Rana, was wounded when he was seized and taken into custody for questioning. The government said that he was the al-Qa'eda mastermind behind the bombing <http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml;jsessionid=EQ4WWL2K5OV55QFIQMFCF GGAVCBQYIV0?xml=/news/2006/02/23/wirq23.xml> of the Golden Mosque in Samarra in February. The attack on the Shia mosque provoked fierce fighting and retaliatory assaults by Shia militiamen and the fierceness of the sectarian strife has led many to consider Iraq in a state of partial civil war. Iraq's national security adviser, Muwaffaq al-Rubaie, said the arrest of Suaidi and 20 of his followers by US and Iraqi troops left the terrorist organisation "severely wounded". He claimed that under interrogation Suaidi had provided details of the group's members and methods. Little is known about Suaidi - not even his nationality - but an Iraq official said he "claims to be responsible for more attacks than he can remember" and has been involved in the insurgency almost from its beginning three years ago. He was captured in a house near Baquaba, north of Baghdad, close to where Abu <http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml;jsessionid=EQ4WWL2K5OV55QFIQMFCF GGAVCBQYIV0?xml=/news/2006/06/09/wirq09.xml> Musab al-Zarqawi, the former al-Qa'eda in Iraq leader, was killed in an airstrike on June 7. Zarqawi was replaced as the organisation's leader by Abu Ayyub al-Masri. The bombing of the mosque in Samarra, for which al-Qa'eda has denied responsibility, sparked tit-for-tat sectarian killing that is claiming as many as 3,000 lives a month.
