The sources said that the 18-year-old Amr Zakarana was killed in the gun-battles that sparked after dozens of Israeli military vehicles and tanks stormed into Qabateya and began searching houses. Witnesses and medical sources said that Zakarana was killed after being hit directly by a grenade fired by Israeli soldiers. In addition, the Israeli troops arrested seven members from the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) and the Islamic Jihad across the West Bank, citing they are wanted, Israel's radio reported. Meanwhile, Israel Radio quoted Israeli army officials as saying that a Palestinian who approached the fence of the Gaza-Israel borders was targeted by Israeli fire, but the report did not disclose whether the Palestinian was killed or wounded. Israeli Defense Minister Amir Peretz said on Monday that Israeli military operation in the Gaza Strip was escalating, but he denied Israel intended to carry out a broad ground operation deep into the heart of Gaza, Israeli daily Ha'aretz reported. Israel launched a massive military offensive in the Gaza Strip three days after abduction of an Israeli soldier by three Palestinian militant groups in a tunnel-born attack on an Israeli army post in southern Gaza on Jun. 25.
