Accoding to The News, activists of the Jamaat-e-Islami (JI), the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) and other religious and political parties, chanting slogans saying `Down with America', `Down with Musharraf and Sabilona Aljihad', converged on the Chowk Shaheedan in historical Qissa Khwani in response to a call given by the MMA for country-wide demonstrations in protest against the killings in an attack on a Bajur seminary. Besides the MMA, three other major processions were also taken out in the city. Strict security arrangements were made for this day and heavy contingents of police were deployed on routes of the procession. Both the United States and the Musharraf government are responsible for what happened in Bajur, demonstrators shouted. Even if the operation was carried out by local forces, the orders came from the US, MMA Secretary-General Maulana Fazlur Rehman said in his address to the rally while referring to the airstrike in Chenagai village. This, he added, is why both are culprits in the case. He was critical of the seminary bombing as it took place against the backdrop of an ongoing peace process in the agency. A Waziristan-like peace agreement was being negotiated in Bajur and locals wanted to resolve the issue through a jirga, but they were bombed, he said. "It speaks volumes of who is responsible for war in the world," the Maulana lamented. Referring to the statements of US President George W Bush and other Western leaders that NATO and allied forces were trapped in Afghanistan and Iraq, Fazl said that NATO commanders had admitted that the war with the Taliban has not been easy. Fazl also talked to the media at Madani mosque soon after the Friday prayers. He asked the NWFP governor to continue his efforts toward settling the issue through dialogue despite the Bajur tragedy. America wants to bring the war to our tribal areas after NATO has been given a tough time in Afghanistan, the Maulana told newsmen. The PML-N also held separate demonstrations in Islamabad and Rawalpindi to condemn the attack. PML(N)'s Central Secretary for Information Ahsan Iqbal, Vice-President Zafar Ali Shah and President of Islamabad Capital Territory Tariq Chaudhry led the demonstration at Aabpara Chowk. The protesters dispersed peacefully after the demonstration and after holding prayers for the souls of the Bajur martyrs.
