Indian coins warn commuters over terror attacks

GG2.NET NEWS [04/11/2006]

POLICE are dropping coins in trains in Mumbai, India`s financial capital,
carrying messages warning commuters to be on guard against terror attacks.

At least 10,000 one-rupee (two US cents, less than a penny) coins are being
placed in train compartments and elsewhere with stickers bearing messages
such as, 'If you are as alert to this coin as you are to unattended baggage,
lives can be saved.'

The campaign, launched by police and communications firm Grey Global Group
on Thursday, followed July`s attack in Mumbai when a series of blasts ripped
through commuter trains, killing 186 people and injuring over 800.

'It`s human nature (to pick up a dropped coin) and we can get the idea
across swiftly,' deputy railway police commissioner Ramrao Pawar told
agencies.

The Mumbai rail commuter network serves as the transport lifeline in the
congested city of 18 million people.

The yellow stickers will be printed in English and three regional languages
-- Hindi, Marathi and Gujarati.

Aside from being distributed in trains, the coins will also be placed at
food stalls and on railway platforms.

The coins will be placed initially in local trains but the scheme could be
extend to long-distance trains, police said.
