Harbour terror exercise as FBI opens Sydney office

1.00pm Wednesday November 8, 2006

SYDNEY - Heavily armed NSW police have taken control of a Sydney ferry as
part of a counter-terrorism drill, as the American FBI prepares to open an
office in Australia's largest city.

As part of a training program, 24 NSW tactical operations police today used
boarding craft to take control of a moving ferry between Bradley's Head and
Middle Head in Sydney.

NSW Police Minister John Watkins said it was important police had the
training to deal with any possible future terrorist attacks on public
transport systems.

"Experience overseas has sadly demonstrated that mass transport systems can
be the target of terrorist attacks," Mr Watkins said in a statement.

Meanwhile, the United States Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) was
today due to officially announce it will open an office at the US consulate
in Sydney.

The FBI already has an office at the US embassy in Canberra and at more than
74 other American embassies and consulates around the world.
