Calgary mother on run in Lebanon with daughters Updated Sat. Dec. 23 2006 11:31 PM ET CTV.ca News Staff A Calgary woman whose estranged husband took their daughters to Lebanon is reportedly on the run in that Middle Eastern country. In addition, two former soldiers were arrested Wednesday at Beirut's international airport. Lebanese authorities accuse them of being part of a five-man commando team that helped Melissa Hawach grab her daughters from her estranged husband. The whereabouts of Melissa and her daughters Hannah, 5, and Cedar, 3, were not known on Saturday. Melissa has legal custody of the two girls. Their father, Joseph Hawach, took the girls to Australia on July 1 for a three-week vacation (He and Melissa had met and married there). He was to visit his relatives. However, he never brought them back. Melissa alleges he then took the children onward to Lebanon, a country where he has citizenship. The Missing Children Society of Canada said in an Aug. 25 news release, "In early August, Joseph advised Melissa that she should travel to Australia where he would meet her with the girls. However, the girls weren't there. "Joseph's family also informed Melissa that the only way the girls would be returned to Australia would be if she agreed to live in Sydney, give Joseph full custody, and dropped the charges against him," it said. The children were taken at an apartment complex attached to a hotel in Jounieh, Lebanon. It isn't clear on what day that event occurred. Friends of Melissa said she had been trying to work through proper channels. With files from The Canadian Press +++ -------------------------- Want to discuss this topic?
