Alleged terrorist Padilla goes on trial WASHINGTON, Jan. 4 (UPI) -- A U.S.-born Puerto Rican accused of plotting terrorist attacks against the United States goes on trial this month in U.S. federal court. Jose Padilla, 36, was detained in 2002 after the U.S. government listened to hundreds of phone calls, many of which seemed to describe a terror plot, The New York Times reported Thursday. Padilla is the only detainee since the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks to go to trial. Padilla reportedly does not discuss violent attacks on any of the recorded phone calls, which took place in the late 1990s with other suspected terrorists, the Times said. The U.S. government will bring lesser charges against Padilla than originally planned, claiming that he was a foot soldier for al-Qaeda, not a terrorist mastermind as claimed in 2002, the newspaper said. The U.S. government is unable to use evidence gained from overseas interrogation sessions, something that has forced prosecutors to drastically alter the charges against Padilla, the Times reported. Padilla has pleaded innocent, the Times reported. [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] -------------------------- Want to discuss this topic?
