Steinmeier opposes European peacekeeping forces in Somalia The EU council chair, German Foreign Minister Steinmeier, rejected European participation in a possible deployment of peacekeeping forces to Somalia. If there is to be an international presence, then it would be preferable that the soldiers come from Africa, said Steinmeier from Brussels. At the same time, he called on the interim government in Somalia to bring about peaceful change. To that end, Islamic groups that are prepared to negotiate must be included. The EU council chair consulted with European representatives of the international Somalia contact group regarding the situation in the East African country. Furthermore, Steinmeier announced a meeting of the full contact group for Friday. The members plan to jointly discuss the establishment of an international military presence in Somalia. Broad resistance to Schaeuble's "shoot down" plan Berlin. Minister of the Interior Schaeuble of the CDU stands mostly alone with his plans for defending against terrorism in the sky. Leading politicians from the SPD (the CDU's coalition partner), the opposition parties in parliament, and also the police union rejected Schaeuble's proposal to alter constitutional law to allow the German Armed Forces to shoot down a hijacked passenger aircraft. The Minister of the Interior meanwhile once again defended his plan to allow the use armed forces not only in defense of the nation, but also as he put it "in direct defense against an attack on the basis of the community". Schaeuble's critics in contrast are of the opinion that the use of a passenger aircraft as a terrorist weapon in no way of equal weight with overall national defense. +++ -------------------------- Want to discuss this topic?
