Five Countries Willing To Send Peace Keeping Troops To Somalia, Says PM (RTTNews) - Somalia's Prime Minister Ali Mohamed Ghedi told the country's parliament on Tuesday that several African nations have agreed to send their troops for peacekeeping efforts in Somalia. He said that Uganda, Nigeria, South Africa, Malawi and Senegal have offered to send their troops to Somalia for peacekeeping operations. Earlier, Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD), a regional body under Kenya's Chairmanship, had dispatched special envoys to various African countries to explore possibilities of troop contribution to the proposed 8000 strong peace-keeping force to be deployed in Somalia. Uganda has already pledged 1,000 soldiers to the cause and other African countries were expected to make similar commitments. Meanwhile Ethiopia said that its troops would remain in Somalia for another "few weeks", to allow the Somali interim government to take the nation into confidence after the defeat of the Islamists, who had held most of the country for six months. The Somali government forces, backed by Ethiopian military, had defeated the Somali Islamists in a quickfire 10-day operation. +++ -------------------------- Want to discuss this topic?
