Egypt detains 16 Islamists despite court order Web posted at: 1/31/2007 1:39:1 Source ::: AFP CAIRO • Egyptian authorities ordered 16 members of the opposition Muslim Brotherhood kept in custody yesterday despite a court order for their release the previous day, their lawyer said. “Authorities have ordered the detention of 16 members of the Muslim Brotherhood whose release was ordered by a court,” Abdel Moneim Abdel Maqsud said. The 16, who include the Islamist group's number three and top financier, Khayrat Al Shater, were arrested in December at the beginning of the regime's latest crackdown against the movement. The Cairo Misdemeanour Court had ordered their release on Monday. The 16 are part of a group of 29 Brotherhood members whose assets were frozen by the state on Sunday on charges of money-laundering and financing illegal activities. The case was to reviewed yesterday but was postponed to February 24, Abdel Maqsud said. The latest wave of arrests and the unprecedented decision to freeze the assets of a number of the movement's senior figures came after students affiliated to the Brotherhood held a military-style parade on Cairo's Al-Azhar university campus last month. Abdel Maqsud said 165 members of the group have been accused over the Al Azhar incident, including 31 leading members and eight who have not been arrested because they reside outside Egypt. The rest are mainly students, he said. Egyptian authorities accuse the movement, which controls a fifth of the seats in parliament, of seeking to revive its underground military wing and eventually topple the regime. +++ -------------------------- Want to discuss this topic?
