Pakistan says Iran has right to nuclear technology
Brussels, Jan 31, IRNA

NATO-Pakistan-Iran
Pakistani Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz underlined Tuesday his country's
support for Iran's right to nuclear technology and said it is essential
to engage the Islamic Republic in efforts to achive peace in the region.

"We believe that Iran has the right to develop nuclear technology for
peaceful purposes under appropriate international safeguards. We do not
support any nuclear weapons proliferation by Iran," Aziz told NATO
ambassadors in a speech Tuesday afternoon.

"This issue, in our view, must be resolved through dialogue as any
resort to force would further destabilize an already difficult regional
situation," he said.

"With Iran, we have traditionally maintained close relations based on
religious and cultural linkages. We seek mutually beneficial trade and
economic linkages and are currently negotiating a gas pipeline from Iran
to Pakistan and India. We believe that engaging Iran is essential for
our political and economic interests as well as for peace and stability
in the region," he told the permanent representatives of the 27-member
alliance.

The Pakistani prime minister's address titled `Pakistan: Anchor For
Regional Peace and Stability' covered a number of issues including
terrorism, ties with Afghanistan, India, Iran and the situation in the
Middle East.

Aziz said that it was necessary to prevent linking terrorism to Islam or
any other faith since terrorism knows no borders, nor religions.

"It is necessary to recognize that Islam is a religion of peace and
toleranoe which preaches harmony and coexistence. The overwhelming
majority of Muslims in the world should not be demonized due to the
actions of a few misguided individuals who exist in every society and
faith," he said.

It was the first time that a Pakistani prime minister addressed the
North Atlantic Council (NAC), the highest political governing body of NATO.

Later, Aziz met European Union High Representative for Common Foreign
and Security Policy Javier Solana to discuss EU-Pakistan relations as
well as developments in Pakistan and the region.

Solana confirmed the EU's strong commitment to building a comprehensive
relationship with Pakistan, including by formalizing and upgrading the
two sides' regular political dialogue and through a political agreement
on non-proliferation and the fight against terrorism, said a statement
issued by Solana's office.

The Pakistani prime minister concluded Tuesday night a three-day visit
to Brussels after holding talks with EU, NATO and Belgian officials.
