Arab countries underline anti-terrorism priorities by Hamida Ben Salah Wed Jan 31, 2:22 PM ET TUNIS (AFP) - Arab interior ministers emphasised their commitment to fighting terrorism and promised unspecified security aid to Iraq and Lebanon. "Referring to the importance of the security challenges which Arab countries face at present the ministers underlined their concern to redouble efforts in the face of terrorism which is at the top of their preoccupations," said a statement at the end of their annual meeting, held in Tunis. Ministers from the 16 of the 22 members of the Arab League present endorsed a new protocol in their struggle against terrorism. They also adopted new measures recommended by security forces covering anti-terrorist measures; border, port and airport security; technical steps and tourists' safety. But they turned down a Libyan proposal for a special anti-terrorism session. The ministers pledged support for the police in Iraq and Lebanon, without giving details, with the final statement saying each country should decide "according to its possibilities." Iraqi Interior Minister Jawad Kazim al-Bulaini spoke of the problems faced by Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki in halting the violence and asked for help in treating wounded Iraqi police officers. The was no minister from the Palestinian Territories (or from Bahrein, the Comoros, Djibouti, Lebanon or the United Arab Emirates) and there was no mention of the situation there in the final statement. Illegal immigration was a major theme, and Libya announced that all foreigners entering the country would soon need visas while Morocco called for cooperation from Europe to develop projects to keep people at home and confront criminals smuggling immigrants and drugs. +++ -------------------------- Want to discuss this topic?
