OIC chief launches Arab-Islamic initiative for Somalia RIYADH, Feb 26 (KUNA) -- Secretary-General of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu declared Monday a joint OIC-Arab League initiative for restoring peace and security in Somalia. In an address to Meeting of Senior Officials of the OIC Contact Group on Somalia, read on his behalf by OIC Assistant Secretary-General for International Affairs Ambassador Atta Al-Mannan Bakhit, Ihsanoglu said the situation in Somalia was still a cause of concern for the international community and the Muslim nation. He voiced hope that the initiative would garner necessary political and material support from the international community and concerned parties. Ihsanoglu appealed to the sons of Somalia, particularly the members of the interim government and leaders of armed groups, to stop all kinds of hostilities, seek sincerely national comprehensive reconciliation and restore stability to their country. The OIC is ready to work with the international community to restore peace and stability to Somalia and normalize the situation there, he underscored. The meeting of the Contact Group was held at the Jeddah-based OIC Secretariat, with the participation of iminent personalities from the United Nations (UN), the African Union (AU), the Arab League, and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD). It probed the report prepared by the OIC Mission on the Situation in Somalia, particularly in the wake of the recent developments and the dramatic escalation of violence there as well as the role that the OIC can play in the peace-building process in the war-torn country.
