Iraqi security advisor: Iran has ended meddling in Iraqi affairs
Sunday 25 February 2007 18:17

Iran has in the last weeks ended its alleged interference in Iraqi
affairs, Iraqi Security Advisor Mowaffak al-Rubaie said Sunday.
Speaking to US broadcaster CNN, al-Rubaie said there was evidence that
Iran had ended deliveries of weapons and bombs to Shiite militias.

Iran has consistently denied such involvement in Iraq.

Al-Rubaie added that it appeared that the leadership in Tehran had
notified some groups in Iraq with which it had close ties to change
their position and support the Iraqi government.

Al-Rubaie however added that there was no evidence that Iran supported
the al-Qaeda terrorist network.

Concerning the imposition of a security plan for Baghdad, al- Rubaie
spoke of "strategic patience," saying that success in bringing security
to the Iraqi capital was a question of months and not days or weeks.

Iraq could not governed by election cycle in the United States, the
Iraqi official said in apparent reference to the need by US elected
officials to justify their Iraq policies domestically.

According to al-Rubaie, the Iraqi government had its first success
against the so-called Mahdi Army, a militia loyal to the radical Shiite
cleric Moqtada al-Sadr.

The Mahdi Army had lost its grip on some neighbourhoods in Baghdad,
al-Rubaie added, saying the militiamen had left Baghdad for areas near
Iran and in the country's south. dpa da mga
