Trinidad judge orders extradition hearing for JFK terror plot suspects

PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad - Three men accused of plotting to bomb New York's
John F. Kennedy International Airport will have until December to prepare a
challenge of a U.S. request for their extradition from Trinidad.

Judge Nolan Bereaux on Tuesday scheduled a Dec. 10 appeals court hearing for
the suspects - Abdul Kadir and Abdel Nur of Guyana and Kareem Ibrahim of
Trinidad - who face conspiracy charges in the United States.

The men were arrested in this twin-island Caribbean nation in June. A fourth
suspect, Guyanese-born Russell Defreitas, who worked as a cargo handler at
the airport until 1995, is in custody in New York.

The four are accused of participating in a Muslim terror cell that planned
to blow up a jet fuel artery that runs through residential neighborhoods and
feeds JFK.

In early August, a judge rejected a defense argument that Ibrahim, Kadir and
Nur could not be extradited under Trinidadian law. The suspects, who have
appealed that ruling, were also denied bail.

U.S. authorities claim that the alleged plotters unsuccessfully sought help
in Trinidad from Jamaat al Muslimeen, a radical Islamic group that staged a
deadly coup in 1990. According to court documents, the men also planned to
seek help from Iran.
