Shiv Sena activists on rampage in Thane
Jan. 2, 2008

Activists of the Shiv Sena set on fire some shops and attacked homes in
Thane on Wednesday, a day after their party leader died of injuries in a
scuffle, the police said.
A mob rampaged about in Jawahar tribal belt of the Thane district, torching
at least three shops and pelting stones at dozens of houses to protest the
death local Shiv Sena leader Ganesh Chaudary in a scuffle, additional
superintendent of police (Thane Rural) Deepak Sakore said.

According to Sakore, Chaudary was involved in a physical brawl Tuesday with
three locals over sectarian issues.

He was injured in the scuffle and later succumbed to his injuries due to
internal bleeding, Sakore said.

The police arrested the three identified as Ali Shaikh, Mansoor Shaikh and
Mohammad Shaikh Tuesday.

A shutdown was observed in Chaudary's memory Wednesday, and things took an
ugly turn when Shiv Sena activists started protesting also against the
influx of what they called "outsiders" in the district.

The police have sought reinforcements to help control the situation and
prevent it from escalating, Sakore told IANS.

"Fortunately no one was injured since the whole area observed a bandh,"
Sakore said.
