Muslim militants in Philippines slain in firefight with military
MANILA - TWO members of the Islamist group Abu Sayyaf were killed in a
gunbattle with troops in the southern Philippines shortly after the group
freed three hostages, the military said on Wednesday.

Marines caught up with a band of Abu Sayyaf militants near the town of
Tipi-Tipo on Basilan island on Tuesday and engaged them in a 30-minute
firefight.

Reports from the ground said two of the gunmen were killed, the military
said in a statement.

'Pursuit operations were ongoing,' the military said.

The Marines launched the assault one day after the Abu Sayyaf rebels freed
three Filipinos being held hostage for more than a week in the latest in a
string of abductions in the south.

The militants had also in the past month kidnapped three workers from a
telecoms company and five electricity workers. All have either been freed
after ransom payments or were rescued.

Abu Sayyaf is blamed for the country's worst terrorist attacks. The group is
on the US government's list of wanted foreign terrorist organisations, and
is blamed for the kidnapping deaths of two Americans abducted in 2001.
